Someone like him is tempting to put in bad situations... even the smallest unfortunate things like a minor inconvenience or something bigger like he got kidnapped and beaten up, or in this case framed and taken away unfairly. I can't help but feel bad even if I was the one who put him in terrible situations as the writer...

I’d love to read fanfics about Hayabusa (I’m a little curious about why his name isn’t translated to Falcon) / the Secretary! Even though they don’t have many lines together in the original work, but in Sparkling Frog, the Secretary got so mad at Hayabusa for making a decision on his own that he hung up the phone on him. They also had some one-on-one moments in Chapter 1 of the second installment— the Secretary told Hayabusa “Don’t be rude” in the same way a mom would remind her kid not to swear at school. Hayabusa has always been just “Hayabusa” even in English translation - so it remains that way. From time to time, the secretary speaks to Hayabusa politely, calling him “Hayabusa-san” but sometimes it is just “Hayabusa”. I sometimes wonder about this and that it is their similar ages that makes him speak more casually. He seems to say “Hayabusa-san” more if he is conducting business to remain professional. “-san” is used more in the 2nd work… maybe it is because Hayabusa is now wearing a suit, he is acting more professional haha.
Because he has no canon name, I will never know what Hayabusa refer to him to as but I would like to think it is the same… Though, Hayabusa would lean towards more casual in my mind (but uses -san more in the 2nd work). He seems to be the more careful type and often doesn’t make rash decisions (Sort of opposite of Hayabusa). The idea that they are junior and senior (in the company) is endearing. But hayabusa doesn’t seem like the type to look up to the secretary (his eyes only look at Washizu!). However the secretary would definately take care of new recruits, he’s charming in a way - winking at koshiba who was a newbie at kyousei in the 1st original work. This must stem from his management duties… However, the secretary and hayabusa hierarchy seem to have shifted later on from the 1st and 2nd work. They seem to be on equal standing(?) now that the Secretary got promoted to manager / head of department and hayabusa is now more as the right hand of washizu.

I like Kyousei being shipped together. Hayabusa / Secretary / Washizu in that order ! A Kyousei bird nest! I don’t really see Hayabusa on the right at all… Actually, I had never seen Hayabusa on the right with anyone so he is on the left side for both relationships. As for secretary’s name, I thought it will be strange to keep referring to him as the secretary. It gets awkward since he is the main character so I wanted to have a name for him. It started as a joke in a small group who is following the english manga with his name being “Secre Tari” which sounds like Secretary in english. So the name “Tari” is born. At some point, I wanted him to fit in more. Since Kyousei is bird-themed, he must be a bird too. Because of this change, I referenced Tari as a nickname one last time in the fanfiction before stopping it. I still call him Tari on social medias because it is cute but it will be Suzume in my works without any nicknames.
Originally, I thought about him as an owl but sparrows are cute and related to Mahjong. As an owl, he will fit in with Washizu and Hayabusa since all three would be birds of prey. Truthfully, he is a sparrow because of my own selfish desire (sparrows are super cute!! I have sparrow plushes and I adore the secretary…). I thought about it a little more because I want him to be both Sparrow and Owl. (Owl seems like a popular choice among Japanese/Korean fans from what I saw). Washizu overwhelms opponents with his monsterous luck (eagle). Hayabusa who can counter that luck and match up to Washizu by cutting mahjong hands with quick calls and wins (falcon). I like to think that the Secretary wins at unexpected times, makinh him less aggressive than the two since he plays more defensively and strikes when everyone least expects it! In that way, it sounds more like an owl right? A silent winning sweep.
So Suzume (Sparrow) can be Fukurou (Owl) at times too! I think is fitting because I was under the impression that he is mild-mannered. But then he has no issue choking a child using a car window, getting super furious and yelling at koshiba, and beating up someone to take their place. In the 2nd work, he is rigging biddings and when someone challenges him, he stands up and butts heads with the man while the tension grows (Wow!!!!) after he diffuses it cooly and mentions they’re not a violent organization (How funny…). One day I would like to see something like this… how a sparrow turn into an owl and showed its talons when playing mahjong or doing something else.

As for "Sparkling Frog," I was referring to Chapters 27–31 of the 1st work, 煌めきの蛙—the arc where Koshiba appears(Koshiba is so cute, I like him). I translated that title as "Sparkling Frog" . I think the Secretary gave Koshiba that wink because he didn't want him to know about Washizu’s underworld business; Hayabusa showing up usually means there’s "dirty work" to do, haha.
The scene I mentioned from the 2nd work happens while they are on their way to play mahjong with some big shots from the political and business world. The Secretary warns Hayabusa not to be rude. Even before meeting those big shots, the Secretary is already worried that Hayabusa might act out of line. It's partly due to his serious nature, but also because Hayabusa is so casual—even in a white suit, he still has that "hoodlum" vibe, haha. Then Hayabusa replies with a very chimpira tone 'Yeah, I know~'—it’s just such a casual way of responding, haha.
"Tari" is such a cute nickname, and the story of how it came to be is very clever. While "Owl" is also fitting, I totally understand why you eventually chose "Suzume" (Sparrow),I like this cute name too. I don’t mind waiting for english scanlations since I have the files of the japanese version saved in my google drive. I use google translate photos to translate the japanese text - I go through chapters, take a screenshot and put it in google to read it. Because of the furigana in speech and the text being from right to left, a lot of the times it doesn’t translate fully or correctly to english. There is a lot of guessing but I get the main idea of what is happening. It is a lot of work and I got lazy which is why I didn’t get through the entire 1st and 2nd work. Instead, I went through to see what is happening and put the pages I find interesting in google translate.

For translation, I think it is a general issue for google translate from any languages that reads from right to left because english is the opposite. Typically, it doesn’t even translate/recognize the the last text on the left or sometimes it combined the last and the first together into something weird because the furigana messes it up. It’s tough but as long as I have the general idea I’m ok… Because I like Washizu, I don’t mind at all. Because I like Washizu, I wanted to write fanfiction related to him! So when I heard he had a spin-off I was invested. I was sad to see there isn’t much work that has Washizu and even less when he is in his prime… so I’m grateful when people put out fanfiction about him.

The Board of Directors may be different in Japan… But here or at least at my company, the workers are not part of Board of Directors but instead, the workers report to the board. Board members here are typically representatives of high-ranking community members, directors, stakeholders, and shareholders. The Chairman and President is also different here. (Originally, I thought Washizu was a Chairman because of the English scanlation but I looked at the Japanese version and find he is actually the President) Because of this, my earlier works refer to him as Chairman, but now I will be using President (I should update but I am lazy haha).
I wonder how Washizu’s title is translated in Chinese… Is there a difference between president and chairman for you? Here, the President of the company can be forcefully fired by the Board just like in the original work. It is confusing, maybe my next step is to research how corporate japan is like, haha.
I like how you see Hayabusa - he clearly handles the Mahjong side and dirty dealings of Kyousei. There was a funny way that I look at Hayabusa to that if someone asks him what he does and what his job title is he will respond “Mahjong and Washizu’s right hand man” (I wonder if this means now Washizu potentially has two right hand haha). But a real worker doesn’t play mahjong all day and a right hand man isn’t a real job title so the next question is: “are you unemployed?”.
I often feel Hayabusa doesn’t have a real job (how else can he be with Washizu all the time?) Or maybe, on legal paper, in order to not raise suspicion, Washizu has made up a position at Kyousei for Hayabusa. This position is mainly to keep up with appearances of course. He definitely has a hand in Kindai Security too! The Secretary is kind-hearted as seen by he cried when Washizu gets fired… I want to think he and Hayabusa are close, especially in the 2nd work since they worked with each other for years.

About that website, I'm wondering if the issue is with my English reading comprehension or if the writing itself is problematic. Apart from the confusion about the Secretary's title, it states that Hayabusa "faked his own death and deserted." I believe this chapter has been translated into English? Hayabusa should have only faked an aircraft malfunction, which allowed him to legitimately avoid carrying out the suicide attack mission. The war ended a week later, and he wasn't assigned a second suicide attack mission. I don't think this should be considered "deserted." It's perfectly normal to be unable to complete a mission due to mechanical failure; nobody can guarantee their aircraft will never have problems. As for Hayabusa always "misreads kanji" . But honestly, I think as a character within the story, he probably just heard some unfamiliar syllables and interpreted them as words he knew. He might not even have known those syllables were kanji characters. So, saying his "reading skills" are problematic seems a bit too presumptive (although Hayabusa does come across as somewhat silly，which make him look like a dog).
Regarding the Secretary years later, your idea is interesting; I've actually thought about that too, mainly by comparing it to Hayabusa's situation.I've always thought that after Washizu retired, the Secretary should be the one managing Kyousei and become its president. Part 2 mentions that Washizu even pushed him into politics to become a politician. So, in the future, he should be quite busy, fulfilled, and successful. Even if I could not fully understand the pages - i can see the images. So when I saw Sparkling Frog, it became one of my favorites. Mainly because the secretary is in distress with missing shoe, torned clothes, and roughed up haha… honestly, this is the part where I started adoring him... i told myself to not get attached to him when i saw this page but now I want to write a lot of things about him haha. I really like how it shows more of the three interacting - looking at your translation, it seems like Haybusa have Secretary as his mahjong partner sometimes too! Wow!! The scanned version of this chapter (and other chapters) I have in my google drive are photos and not digital versions which makes it even more difficult to translate. I could only make out little bits and pieces of what he is thinking. Maybe it’s not him thinking but the narrator? You are correct that the website has details wrong. I’m not sure if the english scanlations came first or the tv tropes came first but there is already small mistranslations on chapters almost a decade ago. For example, Washizu is called Chairman and not President (Shachou), and in volume 1 where Secretary asks to be untied from the chair is “Chairman, please let it go” and not “President, please untie me / please let me go”. There isn’t anything about Hayabusa deserting or faking his death or secretary’s promotion even in the english scanlation. None of those are mentioned at all… I think whoever is in charge of the washizu’s tv trope went through the content (either in japanese or english) and put information down without checking. I was mislead about Secretary’s job title this way ;; But Hayabusa did committed a military offense (at least by America standards).
In America, military deserting means you abandoned your duty. Even if you are not caught, it is still deserting. However, in legal terms, deserting means they have left without permission. Here, Hayabusa deceives them with a plane malfunction and receive permission to leave. I may be looking at this too much, it looks like the permission was given by a fellow pilot on the same mission? If that is so, then he did desert because he needs to receive permission from his superior or commander. If that man was the commander, I think it would be fine. (Though… I’m not sure if that man would be alive to confirm Hayabusa’s story if he was also on a suicide mission…) I thought about it a little more and maybe he “malingered” and not “deserted” but even then it’s not the same becuse malingering is more so deception by pretending you are sick, disabled, or mentally ill to avoid duties. It could also be more in line of “false official statement”. Either way, all three are criminal offenses even if Hayabusa was not caught and got away with it. Laws are different in America and Japan and I cannot find military laws in Japan but I’m sure they have them…. Maybe because America is a highly patriotic country, tv trope website considered Hayabusa a deserter at first glance.
As for Hayabusa’s reading, it seems like there are some words he’s not familar with when spoken to. In chapter 45, he was surprised to learn that Sugamo is a prison because Koshiba said “prison” not in Japanese but as Japanese phonetic saying of the english word “Prison”. Koshiba first said “プリズン (Purizun)” and later uses “監獄 (kangoku)” and that is when Hayabusa figured it out. This is the only example I can think of… I’m not entirely sure where the reading kanji came from. I’m sure Hayabusa could read just fine and maybe have trouble if it uses phonetic spelling of the word or if its in another language. I have a few Washizu Enma anthology and they also like to compare Hayabusa to a dog. In one of them, I recall the Secretary had to fix a letter that Hayabusa had wrote (because he had used the wrong word or something like that). Because this is in Japanese, this is just my guess and may not be true. It may be that the secretary was only fixing up the tone of the letter and not grammar. My memory may also have been wrong… I’m not able to check it right now. This could also have been exaggerated.

I have the other version that include the scene of secretary fixing hayabusa’s letter. If you are interested, I can take photos of that scene and send it to you in a google drive. There are also art of hayabusa as a dog. A real dog!! I believe he is depicted as a german sherpard. Because it is a physical book, I have a difficult time understanding the anthology but I enjoy collecting and seeing the art. (Plus I see more of Washizu, Hayabusa, and Secretary!)
The Secretary managing Kyousei would be great too. I thought Washizu probably handed it off to someone else (someone that he could control and puppet or maybe someone that works for him) He probably still have a lot of stocks and bonds so he’s essentially “in control” anyway. The Secretary has become his own leader, giving speeches on screen, politically influencing (for washizu’s benefits too). I had an scene I wanted to write but I wasn’t sure how to.. but I want to think the secretary would come to the washizu mansion on special occassions (he is wary of being connected to Washizu or the whitesuits in the public eyes so everything is done in secret) If Washizu asks for it, I want to think thatnhe secretly give Washizu information and dirt about others.
Hayabusa on the other hand is unable to leave the house… It is tragic to see his owner grow old. Like a dog, maybe he can sense Washizu’s time running out. When they first met, Washizu was a healthy, crazy strong man that can leash him and run with. Now, Hayabusa has to pull his leash to take Washizu around… He watched him decline, both mentally and physically. It’s tragic… now he remains at Washizu’s side at all time ;;; I’m sure he doesn’t mind but it’s sad. He even lost his pompadour either by his own choice or washizu’s command…
I went through and took some screenshots of what scenes where Hayabusa is a dog and some more scenes that I wanted to share!!! They’re messy and random but I can go through and take proper photos if you like… In one of the scene, Hayabusa says a word incorrectly (I’m not sure what but Washizu states that he should learn Kanji more) There is another scene where its Secretary and Hayabusa - in one of it, Hayabusa is doing a government document and the Secretary is watching him, telling him to be careful. There is another one where Hayabusa is writing a letter at the desk but the Secretary was so disappointed he fell to this knees (haha) I included some cute photos too of Hayabusa dog as well.

I can go through it properly and take photos by one one if you want… this is no problem for me but I worry about the quality since it will be hard to translate haha…
Thank you for sharing the pictures! Seeing them first thing in the morning really made my day. I'm really impressed by how good you are at finding these—I could never track down other fans' works on my own, especially comics. So, it seems everyone agrees that Hayabusa is like a dog. I never really thought about what type of dog he might be. But thinking about it more, a German Shepherd really does fit him best—after all, they're the most loyal and capable dogs.
As for Hayabusa and the kanji part, Washizu corrected him because he misread "遊興" in "遊興施設" (amusement facility). He probably just saw how the word was written somewhere but didn't know how to pronounce it, which is why Washizu told him he should learn more kanji. However, since there's no context provided here, I'm not entirely sure... But it's worth noting that in this scene, when Hayabusa refers to the Secretary, it's written as "Honbucho" but pronounced as "that guy" (a case of Japanese where the reading differs from the written form—as a Chinese person, I don't fully grasp this system). From what I recall, the original work also doesn't clearly specify how Hayabusa addresses the Secretary, so writing about their interactions in fanworks can be a bit tricky. Giving the Secretary a name was a very smart decision on your part.
On the page where the Secretary fell to his knees, he says Hayabusa is writing a report. Honestly, though, I don't think this kind of content qualifies as a report—it's more at the level of a note... And he even wrote "户籍" (household registry), a word typically written with kanji, in kana. That's a bit illiterate, but it's still cute.
It seems Koshiba is a very popular character in the Japanese fandom. I'm really glad to see so many people like him just as much as I do. If possible, please take photos of the other pictures and share them with me too.
I have a lot of these... I like collecting! There is a some more president washizu-related panels in other works that I have collected but these are the kyousei centric ones. (Admittedly, the other ones is mainly related to Akagi and Washizu and not focused on Kyousei even if President Washizu makes an appearance - they are mainly short 3/4 panels)
It did mention something about "entertainment" or "enjoying" in that Hayabusa and Kanji part. I hope my screenshots provide more context to help you more. Also, I never knew Japanese's reading could be different from the written form... that makes it more difficult to translate;; I don't think English ever have this so I don't know how it works haha. I don't really understand the kanji and kana part... Because english only has one way to write things, it's hard for me to wrap my head around this haha.

In the same google drive link, I have put the author of Washizu's spin off 原恵一郎 (Hara Keiichirou)'s Q & A in a document! It is in Japanese - I took it from another fan-made item which interviews the author about the spin-offs! It has some thoughts about how he put together 1st (and maybe 2nd(?) work). It also mentioned he wanted to focus on the secretary but haven't... ;; and he said he wanted Hayabusa and the Secretary to be close.
There is also a timeline of Washizu (also in japanese) in a document. It has when he was born, when he entered university, when he joined the Special Higher Police. This is taken from a Washizu takao site that I archived on the wayback machine to see its contents (It is deleted if you try to find it normally). Washizu is the 2nd son, did you know that?! I was surprised too!
